Parrots and parrot-like birds have long been kept for of their beautiful colours, their ability to mimic strange sounds and their distinctive characters. The order Psittaciformes contains more than 350 species. The cockatoo, the grey parrot, the Amazon parrot, the ara, the eclectus parrot, the lovebird, the budgerigar and the cockatiel are the most popular Psittaciformes that are kept in captivity.
Parrot-like birds have adapted very well to exceptional environmental conditions. Environmental and dietary factors, therefore, have an especially significant impact on the health of these beautiful birds.
At Galluvet Birds and Fowl, we have extensive experience with parrots and parrot-like birds.
Veterinary interventions begin with the right approach to the parrot(-like bird). The examination must be performed quickly, yet thoroughly. At Galluvet, we have just the right skills, experience and expertise to perform blood testing, to administer medications and to generate species-specific case histories (e.g. birds kept individually or in a group, indoor or outdoor caging, newly purchased animals, imports…).
A consultation always starts with a general examination. In addition to that, we have everything we need here in our practice to perform and/or initiate the necessary parasitological, virological and bacteriological sample collection and testing.
For the diagnosis of skeletal abnormalities, egg binding, foreign objects, respiratory infections or to diagnose space-occupying processes in the body cavity, we have our own X-ray imaging equipment.
For more in-depth examinations, we use anaesthesia, endoscopy and ultrasound.
Treatments for aspergillosis – a commonly occurring respiratory disease in large parrots – can be supplemented with nebulisation in one of our aerosol cages specially designed for this specific treatment.
For individual parrots, we prefer consultations in our practice, since we have all the equipment needed for accurate diagnoses and treatment here. For larger collections and breeding birds, we can make house calls, if you wish.
In addition to general blood testing, we also perform the necessary acceptance checks that are commonly performed when parrots are bought or sold:
